Get involved!!! Social networking 101

What is Social Media?

There has been huge amounts of press about this stuff for a long time. You’ve probably seen/heard a fair bit of it already. I like to think that it is a group of websites and technologies that allow you to stay in touch with and grow your network of contacts. Sometimes it’s personal, sometimes it’s professional, but regardless it is about communication – with friends, colleagues, clients, suppliers, and the general public.

Some example sites:

1. Facebook (www.facebook.com)
2. Myspace (www.myspace.com)
3. Twitter (www.twitter.com)
4. LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com)

As a business, why do it?

To increase the number of OPTIONS (for your clients and business relationships) to keep in contact with you.

When should a business get involved?

Get involved when you have the time and resources to ensure that your content is kept fresh and responsive to things such as customer enquiries, market conditions and industry news.

How will it work for business?

Every business is different, so trial, test, refine and play around with this stuff! It can be great fun but you need to be realistic about the time it takes and the return you get on that time. Always remember to ask your clients how they would prefer to be communicated with and you’ll quickly get a gauge on whether it is relevant for or not!
