I had friends in my year that did pretty much the same thing - took a work placement subject and ended up with full time positions with the company at the end of it. While I finished my 5 years of study with only a piece of paper to prove my worth, they had the advantage of <ol> <li>#1 - Having contacts within a company &</li> <li>#2 - Some real world experience in the industry.</li> </ol> The University for the "<em>Real World</em>" should make it a compulsory part of any course. Like you said, it's a win-win situation. Employers get work done for free and the student walks away with at the very least some industry experience and in your case a job.
