What I learnt at Geekversity's Internet Marketing event
In the beautiful surrounds of Sheraton Mirage at Main Beach, I spent the best part of a weekend at Geekversity’s Internet Marketing event.
My purpose for attending was twofold.
1. To learn more about internet marketing
2. To see how they delivered the content
In short, I wasn’t disappointed.
The “Chief Geek” and main presenter, Troy Rushton, was on the money. He covered a full spectrum of topics and broke them down into easy 30-45 min sessions.
This ‘Sizzlers’ approach (a little bit of everything) was effective and the information was educational, useful and most of all it was entertaining.
The event was pitched as an “introduction” to internet marketing and if you knew nothing going in you would’ve walked away with more than enough know-how to get started.
What I learnt
Even having been involved in internet marketing for nearly five years, I still picked up a handful of new ideas, which to me, is the measure of a successful event.
Specifically, I discovered Google’s ‘wonderwheel’ tool that allows you to research micro-niches, Be-A-Magpie.com that allows you to monetise your tweets and I learnt about some affiliate websites like Commission Junction where you can sell existing products and earn a commission.
The other speaker I saw was Ian Naylor, an unlikely geek, he was a British lad covered with tattooes who lives and breathes Internet marketing. Ian’s passion spilled over into the audience as he gave a lively & engaging session on Social media (aka the social web). The highlight was his 7 step strategy to make some pocket money from Twitter.
Having been put to sleep at many seminars or conferences on internet & digital marketing, it was pleasing and unexpected to have such great energy on stage and in the room. I picked up many tips on how to be a good presenter just by noticing things Troy & Ian did on stage.
So to wrap up, it was well worth attending (even on a weekend) especially because it was Sheraton Mirage and they put on lunch for you.
I’d recommend it to people who want to really understand more about the Internet instead of just taking the word of their web design company. It’s a lot more fun when you understand what the Internet can do!
PS. Just don’t call them nerds…! They are proud geeks and they even wear black t-shirts emblazoned with <geek> but the N-word is a no-no!
If this is for you, you can chat to a <geek> on 1800 242 843 or you can visit their website.
