SOS Fitness Craze

By SARAH HYNE

MARCH 20th, 2008

The first thing a visitor might notice as they enter the inner sanctum of the Bluewire Media office is the ample supply of sugary treats on offer. When the mid-afternoon energy slump hits, the unmistakable sound of office chairs rolling against floorboards fills the air as we lazily push ourselves to the huge bowl in the centre of the studio and take an oversized handful of lollies. Nary a week goes by without us munching our way through several share-sized packets of crispy M&Ms, countless zooper-dooper iceblocks, or raiding the snack box of chocolate bars and chips.

Never ones to stand idly by, it comes as no surprise that Adam and Toby have spearheaded a fitness campaign and introduced us to the world of personal training.

Now it has to be said that it was with more than a hint of trepidation that we approached the SOS Fitness studio. Thoughts of muscle-bound gym junkies flexing their muscles in time with thumping techno music almost had us lobbying for an office Nintendo Wii to earn our cardio points.

But tucked at the city-end of Montague Road (next door to a pub - our first lesson in self-discipline!), the modest, whited-out facade of SOS Fitness suggested a different approach to personal training. Inside, the mirror-free studio radiated a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, with cool tunes playing on the radio, and regular-looking people making up the clientele.

Our fears were dispelled instantly.

The half-hour sessions are perfectly in tune with our hectic work schedule and are aimed at getting the most out of us in the space of a lunch break. Our friendly trainers motivate and guide us through some intensive weights exercises or a punishing boxing routine, all the while engaging us in good conversation.

It's safe to say they've shattered the torture-master stereotype we'd had in our minds and now we're all hooked. We're getting time away from our computer screens and feeling fitter and stronger. And if our hard work allows a few guilt-free chocolates every now and again then it's worth it!
