Should You Trust Your Gut?

Let’s say you’re interviewing a new applicant for a job and you feel something is off. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but you’re a bit uncomfortable with this person. She says all the right things, her resume is great, she’d be a perfect hire for this job — except your gut tells you otherwise.…

89 Web Tools for Everyday Business (p.s. most are free!)

While web marketing is often the first discussion we have with clients when it comes to web strategy, marketing is the thin edge of the wedge when it comes to creating value for businesses on the web. What about recruitment, customer service, communications, business intelligence, accounting, financial modelling, bookkeeping, note-taking? There are so many tools now available to make life easier and create much more value for businesses in all of these areas.

At Bluewire Media, we’ve moved towards web based products and the cloud. Why? For 3 reasons:

  1. To build a “work from anywhere” philosophy (Google Apps and Skype means we’ll never again be stranded as we were with the Brisbane Floods last year, not to mention working from Brisbane, Sydney, Bali and San Francisco or indeed anywhere in the world)
  2. To access information and expertise that is as current as possible (accounting with Saasu has live bank feeds for up to the minute cash flows)
  3. To benefit from fantastic products that often require little or no training and are much cheaper than their traditional software counterparts  (like 37signals’ CRM called Highrise and Basecamp, their project management system).

3 Strategies to Build Your Business With Networking

Last year, I retired from networking.

If I never see another mini meat pie, dry goat’s cheese canape, soggy finger sandwich or rubbery poached egg with conference coffee, it will be too soon.

I’ve spent innumerable hours at hundreds of networking events talking to other business owners who only want what I want: To sign me up as their client.

Leaving another fruitless couple of hours small talking with fellow hopefuls, I was often reminded of a line from the TV series ‘The Westwing’, where a character is heard muttering when leaving a meeting:

That was 20 minutes of my life I’ll never get back

Except when networking, I’d lose 2 hours of my life, not 20 minutes.…

Open vs. Closed Office Plans - Which Works For Your Business?

Updated on September 3rd, 2019

If you’re planning on designing a new office space, one of the first questions you’ll likely ask yourself is whether to use an open or closed office plan. This is a debate that had been raging on with people firmly in one camp or the other. There is no one perfect answer to which is better, but depending on your business or organisation needs, one layout may reign supreme over another.

Client meetings should be a major consideration depending on the size of the office space, clients may be able to see staff desks in open plan offices, which could come across as unprofessional.…

5 Tips Entrepreneurs Can Use to Be Captivating On Camera

Video is alive.

It’s a communication medium with propulsion.

As soon as a visitor to your website hits that play button, your vision comes to life.

These words aren’t alive. They’re lying here, dormant, waiting for you to read them. If you don’t, then they’re defunct, they don’t demand your attention. But once that play button is clicked, a movable feast is set in motion and your visitors are along for the ride.

So are you going to bore them, or captivate them?

Here are five steps you can take to be more captivating on camera from an actor, who’s been there and done that on stage and screen.…

How Good Should Leaders Aim To Be As Coaches?

How Good Should Leaders Aim To Be As Coaches?

I had a spirited discussion with a coaching peer and academic recently around just how good leaders should aim to be as coaches. It came as quite a surprise to both of us just how different our positions on the issue were.

My colleague’s view was that leaders should aim to be every bit as skilled at coaching as professional executive coaches. After all, coaching is a core leadership competency today, so why should leaders not aim to be exceptional coaches?

I agree that the best leaders are very effective coaches.…

Updated on October 15th, 2019

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Business is all about people.

In the long forgotten good old days (say 10 years ago) getting more clients was easy for small business owners. To generate more leads for your business, all you had to do was spend more money on advertising. Advertising agencies became rich and powerful by simply getting their clients to spend more money in the Yellow Pages or on TV and Radio.

Those days are gone forever.

There’s a Golden Rule about marketing:

“People do business with People they Know, Like and Trust”.…

5 Essential Habits Of Wildly Successful Intrapreneurs

In the world of business, intrapreneurship is the new black. But just what is an intrapreneur – and how do you know if you are one?

Put simply, intrapraneurs are employees with the drive, innovation, self-confidence and creative, problem-solving approaches more commonly associated with entrepreneurs. Rather than operating in new-fangled disruptive start-ups they founded themselves, however, intrapreneurs function within an established corporation, innovating from the bottom up.

Are you an intrapreneur?

It’s this simple: do you have a burning passion to solve problems within the business you work for through innovation?…
