While web marketing is often the first discussion we have with clients when it comes to web strategy, marketing is the thin edge of the wedge when it comes to creating value for businesses on the web. What about recruitment, customer service, communications, business intelligence, accounting, financial modelling, bookkeeping, note-taking? There are so many tools now available to make life easier and create much more value for businesses in all of these areas.

At Bluewire Media, we’ve moved towards web based products and the cloud. Why? For 3 reasons:

  1. To build a “work from anywhere” philosophy (Google Apps and Skype means we’ll never again be stranded as we were with the Brisbane Floods last year, not to mention working from Brisbane, Sydney, Bali and San Francisco or indeed anywhere in the world)
  2. To access information and expertise that is as current as possible (accounting with Saasu has live bank feeds for up to the minute cash flows)
  3. To benefit from fantastic products that often require little or no training and are much cheaper than their traditional software counterparts  (like 37signals’ CRM called Highrise and Basecamp, their project management system).

We could all use a grammar lesson every once in a while…

Especially if you are writing a LOT of content and hoping to turn that content into customers online. Small grammatical errors can deteriorate the perception of your brand and quickly take you off the map of potential buyers.

I stumbled across this really cool infographic from urbanest – a student accommodation website in the UK.

It breaks down all of the common mistakes people make when it comes to grammar and the English language.

Things like; “Your” vs. “You’re”… and “They’re” vs “There” vs “Their” … and “It’s” vs “Its”

One of my favourite parts of the graphic is when it hits the “affect” vs “effect” debate head on and debunks some common myths about spelling and punctuation.…

Copywriting shocker….. Confession time.

I remember my first Bluewire News vividly — for all the wrong reasons.

It’s Saturday afternoon in Brisbane and I’m nervous as anything. I write the email, design and get it designed and coded. It looks good too (at least by 2005 standards!)

I double check it, triple check it and quadruple check it…. because it’s going out to everyone I know. I’m announcing I am going into business for the first time and it’s being sent to the 700 family, friends and business contacts whom I cajoled into being on my email list.…
