Why 9.41 is Apple time

Tweet

This article I read in Fast Company left me astonished by how much attention Apple pays to every microscopic detail of their marketing campaigns.

Have you ever wondered why all Apple product mockups show the time at just after 9.40? Neither had I (nor had I even picked up on this peculiarity). But indeed, the iPhone’s clock displayed 9.42am. The iPad displayed 9.41.

I’ll let Fast Company explain:

Turns out Apple’s keynote organizers think about this stuff right down to the tiniest detail–and this is certainly one of the tinier details.

Are You Guilty of Interruption Marketing?

Tweet

Interruption marketing is a strategy that is losing impact very quickly.  Think about the last time you enjoyed receiving (or even noticing) any of the following:

Cold calls, direct (junk) mail, a TV advert, newspaper ad, radio commercial or billboard….?

Not many of us enjoy these interruptions especially when they occur during dinner, during a TV show, between songs or clog up your mailbox.

Yet strangely, when people put their marketing hat on, its exactly these ‘ideas’ that are usually dreamt up.  This behavior seems absurd to me!

Are you guilty? …

Why web marketers should own a Flip Cam

Tweet

As a marketer and especially one that loves using the web, I can safely say the best purchase I’ve made lately is the Flip Cam.

What’s the big deal?
The Flip Cam fits in your pocket & can record 2 hours of HD video footage.   Perfect for video testimonials, impromtu (or planned) interviews, product demos, recording a presentation, video blogging and much more!

And content is king after all.  Plus keep in mind most people prefer watching TV to reading a book, so having video content on your website is a good idea.…

Updated on July 15th, 2013

Have you ever sat down to write blog post and just gone blank?

Have you ever sat down and wondered where on earth you’re going to start?

Have you ever sat down and wondered what on earth you’re going to write about?

I know I have and so I figure there might be a few others out there that could use a few tips! While this is specifically related to writing a blog post, I hope you’ll see that it can be applied to other areas of your web strategy – facebook posts, news articles for your website, email newsletters etc.…

David Meerman Scott interview – New Rules of Marketing & PR

Updated on July 15th, 2013

When I had the pleasure of seeing marketing strategist, David Meerman Scott present live via satellite at the Growth Summit in Sydney, I was so impressed that I just wanted to ask a few more questions.  Luckily, David graciously accepted our request.

In the Part 1 of this interview, David explains:

– what the ‘New Rules of Marketing & PR’ are and how they work.
– how he personally used the ‘new rules’ to reach 30 million people for the launch of his book “The New Rules of Marketing and PR“.…

Web strategy goes Rock ‘n’ Roll – Radiohead

Tweet

So here’s a story. It’s not a new one but I stumbled on it again the other day and was reminded of a few things.

Radiohead are widely regarded as one of the most successful rock bands in the world both critically and in terms of popularity.

Coming into their most recent album InRainbows, they had completed their contract with the record company. Their contract had pre-dated iTunes so the band had received no royalties from iTunes downloads for their previous albums at all… It was time to do something different.…

Using social media as marketing tools

Charlie Carter is Bluewire Media’s sales coordinator. As part of his role, he’s in charge of using social media outlets (that’s our Facebook & Twitter accounts, for starters) to expand our sales & marketing outreach.

SO, CHARLIE…

You have a history in commercial & industrial real estate. What’s a nice guy like you doing in a digital industry like this?

Simple really, I was looking for a new challenge! I have always been more technically minded than perhaps some of my former colleagues in the real estate industry and coupled with the fact that I love working with people it was an easy choice at the end of the day.…

Reflecting Your Company's Character With Copy

Tweet

Today at Bluewire we have been discussing how important it is for a website to reflect the character and personality of the business that it represents. When it comes to design this is obvious – you don’t need to explain to companies that the way their website looks will reflect the way people see their business. But when it comes to copywriting, it seems people are less convinced.

Of course, design is important. Not only the way the website looks, but also the way it works will affect customer satisfaction. But what about the words?…

Every Word Should Pull Its Own Weight

Updated on July 15th, 2013

A marketing coordinator at a flagship radio station recently made a comment which got me thinking about what we really take from the words we read. She noted that many of us spend upwards of three years learning how to win grades with fancy words, only to unlearn much of it as soon as we hit the world of employment. She referred to the need to “dumb things down” for the masses.

While I certainly agree that much of the wording used in essays becomes useless in the ‘real world’ – I don’t think that short, punchy copy equates to “dumbing down”.…

Connecting with Customers in the Social Web

Tweet

I recently came across a terrific example of social media usage in business from a Slideshare presentation by Jonathan Crossfield of the Australian web hosting and domain company, NetRegistry.

One case study particularly stood out which involved an interaction @NetRegistry had had with a fellow Twitter user.

How would you rate this example as a first impression for a business engaging a potential client?

Notice how NetRegistry were able to intercept this conversation and direct the user to the relevant product page in a clear and professional manner.

It is now becoming more common for brands to develop social media strategies to monitor and engage discussions about their products in the social web.…
