Honey from The Bees Awards – interviews & highlights
Last week I had the pleasure of helping out at The Bees Awards – the first international award ceremony celebrating excellence in social media marketing.
I was super impressed by the venue, the organization, the entertainment, and most of all – the calibre of the entries and winners. The event really reinforced the energy and vibrancy of the agencies who have embraced social media.
Having the opportunity to ask the winners about their campaigns, what social media means to our industry, and where we’re headed was a rare treat – who better to ask than the innovators?
Some of the key points that came up again and again were:
Honesty and transparency are fundamentals to success.
You’ve got to be on social media engaging with your customers if you expect to have a say in your brand’s image.
If you’re putting your head in the sand you are completely, and utterly missing out!
Despite a few lighting dramas (I hope you’ll all forgive me the bad colouring in the videos) the interviews came up trumps – all thanks to the insights I received.

The brpr Group – winners of “Best Use of Mobile” for their Smirnoff campaign.
This small agency show that being innovative, taking risks, and flaunting creativity are the most important things in social media strategy. Congrats brpr!
Saatchi & Saatchi LA – winners of (among others) “Best Entry Of 140 Characters” for their recruitment stunt.
When the agency were looking for a writer Executive Creative Director Mike McKay tweeted that the funniest response would get the 70k per year job. In the end, it was a dick joke that won Jonathan Pelleg the job, and Saatchi & Saatchi LA a(nother) Bees Award.
Saatchi & Saatchi LA also won “Best Agency” – a gong worthy of much congratulations. See them talk about their win below.
All in all, it was a fabulous experience to be a part of. I was proud that Bluewire were sponsors of the first ever awards too – because as our industry grows, so will the awards.
