Updated on July 8th, 2013

This is a guest post.

Here’s another guest article by John Russell, author of Living with an Illness – 10 stages to dealing with your illness – an e-book that he’s made available for free.

Welcome John Russell…..

Following my recent article (Can you afford free Social Media – Part One) – I realise that I may have struck a nerve in the market place. Hoping that my readers now understand that Social Media isn’t actually a free exercise, in Part 2 I want to help those business owners and CEOs who have made the decision to enter the social media arena with further financial perspective and advice from someone who has done it all before.…

Liz Wiseman talks Native Genius with Toby Jenkins and Adam Franklin

Updated on March 11th, 2013

Why communicating people’s ‘native genius’ is so important.

Toby: Hi I’m Toby Jenkins from Bluewire Media

Adam:…and I’m Adam Franklin

Toby:…and we’re here today with Liz Wiseman and having a talk about a case study where we applied ‘native genius’ to what we do. One of the examples is: Recently, we ran two Web Strategy workshops with clients and they were two quite contrasting workshops. In one workshop we introduced the team members by their native genius and, in the other, I hadn’t.…

Why hosting webinars is good for your online presence

Updated on March 11th, 2013

This is a guest blog post.

Webinars are the perfect platform for improving your online presence. A webinar is essentially Internet based seminars, allowing business owners to host conferences for customers, clients and partners to attend remotely. The form the webinar takes is up to the host, but they can be extremely useful forums for online meetings, tutorials, knowledge and idea sharing events; presentations, product and service demonstrations, or simply as a forum for conversations between hosts and attendees.

Crucially, webinars can form an important extension of a website or blog, adding a personal touch and an extra dimension to online businesses.…

LinkedIn, but out of your network?

Updated on July 8th, 2013

The other week you may have been graced with a brief email thanking you for making up the three million Australians subscribed to LinkedIn.

The archetypal message was complete with a photo of happy LinkedIn users and a personal signature from the Australian managing director. You probably would have also skimmed it for 20 seconds before hitting delete. Beyond the simplistic efforts to keep in touch with LinkedIn members, the self-proclaimed milestone may be worth noting.

Unique viewers vs. active users
Social Media News does bring up an important fact.…

Pinterest for Business?

Updated on July 8th, 2013

Recently we posed the question to our Facebook and Twitter followers “how does your company use Pinterest”? After receiving a fabulous response from Suzie Wiley from architecture practice Surroundings we asked her to do a guest blog post for us.

In the words of Suzie Wiley…

As a young architecture practice, much of our world exists online, we value being nimble and embrace new digital platforms so we can work and play anywhere. We are loving this digital cloud revolution, it saves us time and allows us to hang out and do what we love – designing great space for people to enjoy.…

Blogging tip – Get vocal on the hyper-local

Updated on July 14th, 2014

You’ve got a small business perhaps. Or maybe it’s a big business. Maybe it’s somewhere in between. And you get that by blogging you’ll be updating your website with keyword-rich content and it’ll help your performance when it comes to search engine ranking. But ultimately, if you’re going to spend all this time tap-tapping, you want people to actually read it, and what’s more, you want them to link to it for extra Google points.

But how do you get people to care? How do you get them to know you and listen and come back for more?…

No I won’t. Here’s why.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending Q Music’s conference Women In Music at the Judith Wright Centre.

I heard from all kinds of ladies working in the industry – from musicians to publicists to label owners and the resounding message was this:

Work hard, be creative and take every opportunity you can.

If you do this, we heard, you’re likely to succeed.

Whilst that seems like pretty solid advice at first look, Original Matters Manager Cathy Oates took a somewhat difference approach when she put her success and the success of the bands she manages (Angus and Julia Stone for example) down to one simple thing: saying no.…

John DiJulius is the authority on customer service and this book, “What’s the Secret?”, proves it. If you’ve ever wondered why good service is so hard to find these days, why your employees don’t get it or why some companies seem to be able to charge whatever they like… you’ll find the answers in here!

Why I liked it

Throughout the book, it’s easy to understand how the information relates to your own company and how you could implement it yourself. Plus, it’s filled with graphs, lists and diagrams, which I love!…

Why projects fail, your website sucks & nobody reads your blog! (Weekly round-up Vol. 73)

The two key causes of web project failure – Smart Company
…and how to avoid them! Craig Reardon explains how 1) major changes of direction can throw a project out of wack and chew up budget and 2) competing phases that don’t align can create dominos of missed deadlines.

4 Reasons Your Website Sucks – Hubspot
How to make your website not suck: make sure people can find you (search engine optimisation is a start), focus on your client/user (talk about them, not your company), have clear navigation and calls to action (more important than “wow factor” or bleeding-edge design), don’t automatically play sound or video (people will leave before finding the “off” button).…

Let me give you something for free!

I’d like to share something with you… that sharing’s pretty cool!

Jason Fried is from 37 Signals, the company behind the suite of products Bluewire now uses to manage projects (Basecamp) and contacts (Highrise).

Taking a look at the kind of companies that also use these products, I think he knows something about marketing… This video discusses the merits of “marketing by sharing”: getting the word out about your product, service or business by teaching and sharing information.

Jason starts by explaining how he subconciously stocked his kitchen with utensils and books by companies and chefs who had taught him something in the past.…
