Inbound conference

2,800 inbound marketers gathered in Boston this week for Inbound12.  Since I was one of only 3 Aussies there, I want to share my Top 8 marketing insights from the Inbound conference which we flew around the world to attend.

1. Get ready to news-jack

How…?  David Meerman Scott says to track Google News for what’s happening now and if you find a topic you can somehow relate to your blog, post something in real-time.  If journalists see your content as they are looking to report the story, you may news-jack it & earn thousands of backlinks!…

My take on The New Rules of Marketing & PR 3rd edition

Updated on November 24th, 2019

When David Meerman Scott wrote the first edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR,  Twitter didn’t exist and Facebook was only used by uni students.

Haven’t times changed since 2007?

Yes, we’ve seen social media sites like Facebook and Twitter explode and some like MySpace, implode.  I agree certainly that internet years are like dog years!

I like how David explains the old rules. There used to be three ways to get attention.

1. Buy it (adverts)
2. Beg for it (press releases)
3.…

David Meerman Scott

David Meerman Scott co-created the Web Strategy Planning Template with Bluewire Media in 2010.  It was designed as a free tool to help organisations develop their web marketing strategy.

When David was in Australia earlier this year, we asked him to explain how to use the template and why it is so useful.

Here’s here interview with David

David Meerman Scott:

“Hey how’s it going? So, I just flew 14 hours from Los Angeles to do a little bit of surfing, and here we are, had a good lunch today with the guys.

Making news – what makes the cut and how you should apply it to your copy

You’ve heard David Meerman Scott say every company should get themselves a journo to write their copy.

He calls it “brand journalism” and describes it like this:

“Creating interesting information online that serves to educate and inform consumers. People in companies now realise web marketing success comes from creating content-rich websites, videos, podcasts, photos, charts, ebooks, white papers and other valuable content.”

As well as being able to create content quickly and efficiently, journalists also have the capacity to think up story ides that will be relevant to a specific audience.…

The finest pickings

Here David Meerman Scott shows how Nordstrom’s employee got it right.

We always get a bit excited at Bluewire when we see big companies taking the plunge and embracing social media. But what’s even better is the personal aspect. Who wants to chat with a big ol’ company? What we want is to engage with the people within it. After all – they’re the ones that are going to know their stuff, right?

Seth Godin’s take on the price/value mismatch.

You can always count on Seth Godin for a touch of perspective amongst all the marketing noise.…

The #1 Question To Ask For Your Social Media Policy

Updated on June 15th, 2016

If you’re looking for legal advice about social media then Vivienne Storey, General Manager at Blands Law, is a great person to ask.

Why? She uses it. (The first time I met her she confessed she was a twitter addict! You can follow her on twitter @mysocialpolicy or read her blog: My Social Media Lawyer.)

Particularly when trying to convince CEOs, we are frequently asked about the legalities of social media policies so I asked her to write a guest post to address just that.…

Updated on June 15th, 2016

If you’re wondering how to get involved in social media and ‘protect yourself’ at the same time then you’re not alone!

Arguably the biggest fear people have is that staff will run rampant and give the company a bad name.  Or worse still, that customers will air their grievances publicly and it will end up being a marketing & PR nightmare.

The good news is there’s a way forward — a social media policy!

Firstly a huge thank you to Vivienne Storey (@mysocialpolicy) from Blands Law for this interview with David Meerman Scott (@dmscott) at last week’s Real-Time Marketing & PR masterclass organised by The Growth Faculty (@BizGrowthTips).
