This is a guest post.

Vishal Gumber is the founder of Appsquare, an Australian app development company that creates innovative apps, provides part funding for selected app ideas and also helps app developers get funding through its network of Venture Capitalists and Angel Investors.

Welcome Vishal.

Social media is going visual and Pinterest has a lot to do with it.
Because pictures really do speak more than words – especially in the restaurant business – and there’s a lot you can convey better through a single image than with a whole page of text, you ought to get yourself active on Pinterest right now!…

This is a guest post.

Here’s another guest article by John Russell, a Cloud Consultant for divestIT, Director of CloudBaseMedia and author of Living with an Illness – 10 stages to dealing with your illness – an e-book that he’s made available for free.

Welcome John Russell.

The impact that Steve Jobs had on our world was incredible. With his famous reality distortion field he made the impossible, possible. He took an idea and turned it into a reality. Quite simply, Jobs took his ideas and turned them into consumer necessities.…

Gary Bertwistle – How social media impacts marketing and promotion

Tweet

I’ve been a long time fan of Gary Bertwistle as a marketing speaker (originally at a TEC event) and as an author.  So it was a real thrill when we sat down to discuss social media’s impact on marketing and promotion.

Here’s the video we recorded in Sydney and below that is the transcript:

How does social media impact marketing and promotion?
Hi I’m Gary Bertwistle and today we’re talking about how does social media affect marketing and brand. And having worked with a myriad of different companies of all shapes and sizes, the biggest issue today is that people are confusing promotion with marketing and people are using social media is a tool to promote themselves but unless the message you are putting out in social media differentiates you from everybody else using social media to promote themselves, then it’s not a piece of marketing, it’s actually a piece of promotion,

What is the difference between promotion and marketing?…

How to reach a targeted audience through leveraging popular #hashtags

Case study

It’s a bit of a Monday night ritual for me – a glass of wine, Twitter and the ABC show Q&A hosted by Tony Jones.

The show is “live and interactive” and that means Twitter is alive with comments and questions, with viewers using the hashtag #qanda while the show is on.

The Queensland Premier’s marketing team has recognised that those monitoring and contributing to the #qanda hashtag are generally likely to be interested in politics and have given them a chance to ask Anna Bligh a question.…

Putting the squeeze on Facebook promotions

Shanon here in the Bluewire Media office is a smart dresser.

On the weekend, he bought a pair of jeans from a popular chain store. The sales assistant handed Shanon his jeans, and then encouraged him to “Like” them on Facebook. Just a click on their page, a symbol of support for their business, and Shanon would go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher.

This is not unusual. Several friends of mine use Facebook to promote their businesses. They run competitions on their walls and host giveaways for Facebook friends who give them the thumbs up.…

THE MARKETING GENIUS OF GUEST BLOGGING

Besides the fact that Steph Bowe is seventeen years old and her first book was published when she was sixteen (I think I was selling ice-cream) she has also appeared at prestigious writers’ festivals and contributed pieces to The Age (I got to wear a pink hat.)

And she is now guest blogging for Brisbane City Council.

A couple of questions:

  1. What on earth have I been doing with my time?
  2. Whose clever idea is this guest blog thing?

GUEST POSTS FOR VARIETY

A friend sent me a link to ibrary, Brisbane City Council’s new, dedicated website for high school students.…

Video interview with Dave Peck – social media strategist & top bloke!

Dave Peck (or Britney!)

During my time in San Francisco I was lucky enough to meet and interview Dave Peck – the social media strategist for Meshin.

He’s based out of Palo Alto Research Centre (home of the ethernet) in Silicon Valley.

Dave’s career is pretty remarkable – it was kick-started while he was playing Second Life (as a young blonde named Britney no less) and has grown in even more remarkable ways.

To name but a few of his achievements:

  • Dave has built online communities for Sergio Rossi, Stella McCartney, Coca Cola and Wells Fargo,
  • He has also worked as a social media strategist for The Grammys, The Ozzy Osbourne Auction, and NPR; and
  • He’s been profiled by CNBC and CurrentTV for his work in social media and community building.

Let me give you something for free!

I’d like to share something with you… that sharing’s pretty cool!

Jason Fried is from 37 Signals, the company behind the suite of products Bluewire now uses to manage projects (Basecamp) and contacts (Highrise).

Taking a look at the kind of companies that also use these products, I think he knows something about marketing… This video discusses the merits of “marketing by sharing”: getting the word out about your product, service or business by teaching and sharing information.

Jason starts by explaining how he subconciously stocked his kitchen with utensils and books by companies and chefs who had taught him something in the past.…
