LinkedIn, but out of your network?

The other week you may have been graced with a brief email thanking you for making up the three million Australians subscribed to LinkedIn.

The archetypal message was complete with a photo of happy LinkedIn users and a personal signature from the Australian managing director. You probably would have also skimmed it for 20 seconds before hitting delete. Beyond the simplistic efforts to keep in touch with LinkedIn members, the self-proclaimed milestone may be worth noting.

Unique viewers vs. active users
Social Media News does bring up an important fact.…

Take me to your Twitter

A newbie to the nest

I know it’s important not to measure one’s worth in followers. But after a fortnight of being on Twitter, I’ve amassed (yes) nine followers. One-third of these are related to me. As you can see from Angus Russell’s post about Twitter last week, he is beating me by 220 followers. Not that it’s a competition. It’s just that my mum doesn’t use social media.

For such a long time, my friends have raved about how good Twitter is. These Twitter pushers hang out on every corner, opening their trench coats to flash you something to weaken your resolve: Chat with Dr Karl!…

Who you gonna call? A social media wake up

THE RISE AND RISE

In the first week of January 2011, the Facebook page of the Queensland Police Service was ‘liked’ by 6400 people. By the second week of January, with flood waters threatening, that number had risen to more than 160 000. On top of this, Twitter followers of the QPS increased ten-fold during the same period. In times of disaster, Queenslanders—and citizens the world over—are not only using, but relying on social media.

At a recent symposium on social media, QUT Associate Professor Axel Bruns argued that demand will increase for emergency services and government bodies to communicate with people via social media.…

Q&A with Kelly Olexa – social media, vlogging & the power of conversation

Tweet

A few weeks back I was lucky enough to have the chance to meet and interview Kelly Olexa.

With more than 28,000 followers on Twitter, a successful YouTube channel that receives thousands of hits per entry, and a book on the way, it’s clear Kelly Olexa knows a thing or two about the power of social media when harnessed correctly.

Here she tells us how she fell into social media as a means of professional networking after losing her job. But the level of success that came out of “talking alot” as Kelly modestly puts it, could hardly have been anticipated.…

Why projects fail, your website sucks & nobody reads your blog! (Weekly round-up Vol. 73)

The two key causes of web project failure – Smart Company
…and how to avoid them! Craig Reardon explains how 1) major changes of direction can throw a project out of wack and chew up budget and 2) competing phases that don’t align can create dominos of missed deadlines.

4 Reasons Your Website Sucks – Hubspot
How to make your website not suck: make sure people can find you (search engine optimisation is a start), focus on your client/user (talk about them, not your company), have clear navigation and calls to action (more important than “wow factor” or bleeding-edge design), don’t automatically play sound or video (people will leave before finding the “off” button).…

I just had a fabulous interview with Liz Strauss of Successful Blog. She shared lots of insights about building your network, both on and offline, as well as tips to help your blog thrive.

I’ll be posting the video of that soon, but I just wanted to share one little morsel:

Liz Strauss talks about making the most of your personality online. – audio file.

“There is information all over the internet, but there is only one you.”

I look forward to more and more companies becoming personable through social media.…

Google Instant, designing great presentations & more (Weekly round-up Vol. 72)

Last week saw the launch of Google Instant – Google’s new real-time, predictive search. Right now, you might only be able to see it when you’re logged into a Google account (it’s being rolled out slowly) but you should come across it in the near future. Here’s a quick wrap-up:

  • Mashable’s live notes from Google’s launch presentation
  • Reload Media’s response to what Google Instant means for SEO
  • Mashable talks about the different results for single letters (eg. “w” brings up weather results before you keep typing)

My initial thoughts are that it will be a toss up between speed and visual disturbance from the constantly shifting results.…
