Welcome Matt

Australia’s most successful brands on Twitter get dramatically better customer feedback than their struggling peers. So what’s the secret to positive customer relationships on Twitter?

How to create the new Twitter profile in 4 steps

Updated on February 7th, 2013

Twitter launched a new user profile design across their Web, iPhone, iPad & Android apps last week allowing further customisation of your profile. I wasn’t aware and chances are a few of our readers (maybe you?) missed this as well so I thought why not share the quick tip so you too can make the most of the new design.

According to Mashable, only 8% of the top 100 brands have taken advantage of the new setting so here’s your chance to get ahead of the big guys.…

Navigate Twitter ‘Like a Boss’ – 24 helpful keyboard short-cuts you probably didn’t know about

Updated on July 8th, 2013

A little known feature (to me anyway) of twitter.com is that it can be used solely via a keyboard. You can do everything from go to one of your followers profiles, direct message, load new tweets, retweet, reply & more.

My favourite has to be the ‘.’ (full stop) It’s a much more efficient way of loading new tweets & scrolling back to the top when you’ve left a twitter window open in the background.

Simply hit Shift + ? (as if you were typing a question mark) on any twitter page to bring up the list of short-cuts.…

Social media naysayers

There is a growing segment of society taking a moral stand against the new world of social media. They choose to boycott all forms of social networking and make life difficult by not having a facebook page or twitter identity. They expect to be actual friends and swap email addresses or, god forbid, phone numbers, in order to stay in touch. If you’re ever face to face with one such renegade they will have you feeling silly reasonably quickly. They’ll say, “when did we all turn into idiots desperate to share every boring detail of our predictable thoughts and lives?”  …

How to reach a targeted audience through leveraging popular #hashtags

Case study

It’s a bit of a Monday night ritual for me – a glass of wine, Twitter and the ABC show Q&A hosted by Tony Jones.

The show is “live and interactive” and that means Twitter is alive with comments and questions, with viewers using the hashtag #qanda while the show is on.

The Queensland Premier’s marketing team has recognised that those monitoring and contributing to the #qanda hashtag are generally likely to be interested in politics and have given them a chance to ask Anna Bligh a question.…

Is Twitter the Queensland Reds’ Secret Weapon?

Queensland Reds superstar Quade Cooper tweets up to 6 minutes before kick-off and the coach encourages it!

Rugby fans can follow the Reds on Twitter and are even likely to get a personal reply  if they tweet their favourite player.

Coach Ewen McKenzie is a self-confessed ‘binge twitterer’ and constantly uses the real-time tool to communicate with players and fans.

And Reds captain James Horwill uses Twitter to fire up his team, rally supporters and drive ticket sales!

It’s no wonder Suncorp Stadium will be a full house on Saturday night.…

Take me to your Twitter

A newbie to the nest

I know it’s important not to measure one’s worth in followers. But after a fortnight of being on Twitter, I’ve amassed (yes) nine followers. One-third of these are related to me. As you can see from Angus Russell’s post about Twitter last week, he is beating me by 220 followers. Not that it’s a competition. It’s just that my mum doesn’t use social media.

For such a long time, my friends have raved about how good Twitter is. These Twitter pushers hang out on every corner, opening their trench coats to flash you something to weaken your resolve: Chat with Dr Karl!…

Facebook’s ‘Like Box’

We’ve all seen a Facebook ‘Like Box’ before, even though some of us may not have know what it was called.

[sc name=”like-boxes”]

The Facebook Like Box has a couple of advantages over a simple link to your Facebook page:

  • The user can like your page without having to leave your website, and
  • It can also display your news feed, follower count and profile pictures of your fans.

These two advantages make it more likely that a single website visitor will ‘Like’ your Facebook page because:

  • They can see that your page is active and that you have some fans (possibly even some of their own friends are fans), and
  • It’s as easy as a single click, and won’t distract them from other tasks.

Who you gonna call? A social media wake up

THE RISE AND RISE

In the first week of January 2011, the Facebook page of the Queensland Police Service was ‘liked’ by 6400 people. By the second week of January, with flood waters threatening, that number had risen to more than 160 000. On top of this, Twitter followers of the QPS increased ten-fold during the same period. In times of disaster, Queenslanders—and citizens the world over—are not only using, but relying on social media.

At a recent symposium on social media, QUT Associate Professor Axel Bruns argued that demand will increase for emergency services and government bodies to communicate with people via social media.…

Video blogging – tips to get started

Updated on July 15th, 2013

Over the years we’ve recorded and shared dozens of video interviews with experts across a whole range of fields. Not only have we learned a whole lot ourselves through the knowledge of others, we’ve also been able to share a whole variety of perspectives with our own audience.

On the strategy side of things we have also generated hundreds of re-tweets, back-links and contacts through sharing these videos.

And while it’s as simple as recording, editing and posting a video, there are some nifty ways that you can leverage your video blogging (or vlogging) to make it more beneficial for your overall web strategy.…
