In January 2005, Tobes and I decided on the name “Bluewire Media”, and took the plunge to register it as our business.
This week Bluewire turned 14…! It’s hard to believe really.
Why the name “Bluewire”…?
Well back then, you may remember you needed the Blue (Ethernet) Wire to connect to the internet.
The .com.au domain was available and so was the business name. We were off and racing!
‘Racing’ around Brisbane in the summer heat, literally knocking on doors asking if people wanted a website. Haha.. it should’ve been pretty soul crushing getting rejected so much, but we were young and enthusiastic, so we just kept on going.
If you know our story well, you’ll know we soon graduated from ‘door knocking’ to ‘cold calling’ and somehow landed our first client!
From those humble (almost comical) beginnings Bluewire evolved into a 12 person digital agency by 2013 working with hundreds of clients.
We learnt a lot about business during this period — the brutal reality of cash flow, the importance of sales, the intricacies of hiring and firing. We certainly weathered some storms and came out stronger.
We also realised our own strengths, and one thing that came reasonably easily for us was ‘digital marketing’. We shared ideas on our blog and gave away our marketing templates on our website, and before we knew it we had an audience of tens of thousands of people all over the world who were keen to learn more.
Then we published everything we’d learnt about marketing in our book Web Marketing That Works. It became an Amazon #1 best seller and for me, it was a very proud moment and a culmination of our first 9 years in business.
After the book came out in 2014, Toby and I decided to focus purely on the education part of the business (training, consulting and speaking) and discontinue the “agency” side of things.
This was as confronting as it was liberating.
Liberating that we could focus on what truly energised us and build a business that had significant scale, but confronting because we no longer had room for most of our awesome team.
We’d prided ourselves on looking after our staff and the new direction of the business meant we didn’t need the developers, designers, copywriters and support team any more.
We did our best to help staff find roles with other companies or start their own business as freelancers. It was all amicable and many got promotions and pay rises with their new employers. We’ve maintained contact with our old team and some are in fact clients today.
Since 2014, we’ve focused on ‘marketing education’ and in those 5 years we’ve worked with hundreds more businesses via coaching, consulting, online courses, workshops and conferences.
Much has changed in the 14 years since we started, but I still feel just as excited about Bluewire and even more optimistic about the opportunity of digital marketing for businesses.
Anyway, that brings us to today — the start of 2019.
