So let’s get into it… Speaking from the stage at conferences or even networking breakfasts can be very valuable to your business. You can share you message, win clients and meet cool people. Here’s some questions I’ve been asked.
Story #1. How did I get started as a speaker?
- In terms of learning how to speak in a public setting, the short answer is I hired a speaking coach who prepared me on many levels — crafting the message, verbal delivery, slide design, body language, turning nerves into positive energy, voice techniques, what to wear and the importance practicing.
- Even with a coach, dozens of hours spent rehearsing and a live practice at a lower stakes breakfast event, I look back at the video from 2008, and can see a huge difference to what the delivery is like today. The main thing my coach taught me what practise. Each time you say something, you get better, so the more you do it the more you’ll improve.
- By the way here’s a 7 minute excerpt from my recent speech “Effective Social Media Marketing in 15 Minutes a Day”. It’s free till Friday and it’s usually kept inside our Web Marketing All-Access Starter Pack.
Story #2. What’s the business side of speaking like… ie. how on earth do you get gigs?
- My short answer is the first thing I did was I optimise my speaker page so Google could find it. Back then I had no book, and I realised I had much less experience and profile that the other marketing speakers out there. But what I did know was how to get found on Google. I applied the same techniques that got us ranking number one for other phrases and before long I was on page 1 of Google (and getting booked!).

- No-one knew I was a relative newbie but because they saw me on Google, the bookings came in. After 5-10 freebies, my coach felt I was ready to ‘go pro’ and begin charging. It was terrifying. But we started small and built up and he reminded me I’d put in more work than most other speakers and that was very valuable to the event organiser. Once you start to do a few events, and if you are decent (ie you have practised enough!) you should start to get booked for jobs by other people in the audience who see you.
- This was all amplified when Toby and I published our book. A book really helps you get more engagements and speaking gives you a platform to sell more books! More on that in the Bestseller Summit Online.
