Most content marketers will naturally choose Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter as their go to social media platform.

These social media sites have big user volumes without a doubt. They also have a lot of competition.

You may be a blogger, content marketer, small business or start-up; without an established following, you are going to struggle to get attention on the big social media sites initially.

So which social media platform is great for someone new or just starting out? That’s where StumbleUpon can offer a unique alternative.

StumbleUpon is the 4th highest traffic driver among social media sites. The biggest differentiator in using StumbleUpon is it sends traffic and real users direct to your website. This is in direct contrast to how Twitter or Facebook works, where you have to compete for attention and then hope for clicks.

StumbleUpon does have some weaknesses however. Users have a knack of hitting the “STUMBLE” button and might bounce off to other more interesting things on the web.

To increase engagement, include an image above the fold and use text formatting and sub-headings to break up the wall of text.

Be patient and work on accumulating traffic from various sources – StumbleUpon is one option. Creating visual content and titles that hook the reader can go a long way. Good luck with your content marketing efforts!
