Online Magazine IZE Takes On Print
This is a guest post – Madeline Hay is a recent graduate from the Interactive and Visual Design programme at QUT and also the co-founder and creative director of IZE, an online magazine that is recently delving into the print world.
Welcome Madeline…
IZE Magazine is an online magazine focusing on Brisbane fashion, music and youth culture. It started in December 2011 by Nicole Pires and Me (Madeline Hay) when we graduated from high school. We were curious about the blossoming creative scene in Brisbane but there wasn’t a magazine available to us at the time that we would want to read. In these four years, the magazine has grown into a platform for creatives to showcase their talent. The magazine boasts twelve issues under its belt and has an edgy, innovative and fun aesthetic.
I’m the co-founder and creative director of IZE. My role includes creative direction, editorial design, content planning and management, editorial strategy, social media and team management.
For IZE’s thirteenth issue, it is moving out of the online sphere and into the print realm. To reach the dream of moving to print, IZE has launched a Pozible campaign to raise the funds to cover the printing costs.

By pledging to IZE’s campaign, you can pre-order the print edition as well as grab some really cool rewards such as an A4 typography print by Mika Campbell, a tote bag or delicious homemade cupcakes delivered to your door.
In a society where the digital sphere is evolving so rapidly, it can be difficult for online media to break away from this safety net. Digital publishing gives ease of access to a wide audience while remaining without cost, something that is essential for a not-for-profit magazine like IZE. Furthermore, IZE exists in a world where magazines are thriving online, moving to print may seem like a regressive rather than progressive step. However, despite the dominance of digital media, the interest and demand for physical copies of independent magazines has never been higher. Magazines have had a revival and young creatives want to see their work in print.
Me showcasing IZE at Departures15 – QUT’s Interactive and Visual Design graduate exhibition
Whilst running the magazine, I’ve also been studying a dual degree of Interactive and Visual Design and Marketing at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). I’m a recent graduate of this program and showcased the magazine in the graduate show held on November 11 called Departures15 where we won the social media award presented and sponsored by Bluewire Media.
