Putting the squeeze on Facebook promotions

Shanon here in the Bluewire Media office is a smart dresser.

On the weekend, he bought a pair of jeans from a popular chain store. The sales assistant handed Shanon his jeans, and then encouraged him to “Like” them on Facebook. Just a click on their page, a symbol of support for their business, and Shanon would go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher.

This is not unusual. Several friends of mine use Facebook to promote their businesses. They run competitions on their walls and host giveaways for Facebook friends who give them the thumbs up.…

National Broadband Network – Good or Bad for businesses in the web industry?

Tweet

Could you imagine your life without broadband internet? It would certainly make our job here at Bluewire Media a lot different!

Today Prime Mister Julia Gillard was in Armidale to switch on the first mainland Australia site of the Nation Broadband Network (NBN). The government is spending $43billion over the next 8 years so we can experience 100x faster broadband speeds. While there is a lot of debate surrounding the project, what will it mean for business like us where the internet is a primary resource?

I believe it will be a leap forward in how we not only communicate, but will allow for greater flexibility to deliver content that previously couldn’t have been sustained on the current network.…

Department of Call Us if Another Offer’s on the Table

You may have read some of our other posts on customer service. Or, you may simply be looking for ideas to set yourself apart from everyone else.

Here is a recent experience I had with an industry who aren’t usually known for stepping outside the box when it comes to customer service…

We all know how expensive electricity is becoming and you have probably been exposed to several electricity suppliers trying to vie for your business by offering a better deal.

I normally only receive bills from my supplier, until the recent letter and personal business card I received from Origin Energy.…

THE MARKETING GENIUS OF GUEST BLOGGING

Besides the fact that Steph Bowe is seventeen years old and her first book was published when she was sixteen (I think I was selling ice-cream) she has also appeared at prestigious writers’ festivals and contributed pieces to The Age (I got to wear a pink hat.)

And she is now guest blogging for Brisbane City Council.

A couple of questions:

  1. What on earth have I been doing with my time?
  2. Whose clever idea is this guest blog thing?

GUEST POSTS FOR VARIETY

A friend sent me a link to ibrary, Brisbane City Council’s new, dedicated website for high school students.…

Marketing in the age of Google

Search engines in 3 steps

Marketing in The Age of Google (by Vanessa Fox) is an insightful book about search, how it’s impacted the web and our lives, and how to make the most of it for business.

Vanessa goes into detail about the specifics of search engine optimisation and how search engines can be used for business planning, research and testing. i definitely agree with the tag line: “Your online strategy IS your business strategy”. The information is good, tying together the various concepts and tools available with examples and diagrams.…

How to find lost emails in Gmail. CloudMagic.

Tweet

A big thanks to @Angus_Russell who knows I’ve been struggling to find emails in Gmail — especially the emails I send internally with my two daily priorities.  I can never find them when I need them… frustrating.

You’d think searching in Gmail would be easy since that is what Google ‘does’.

But for some reason I was forced to remember all sorts of commands like from:  to: and remembering to select the right folder to search. Even then there were emails I couldn’t find.

Can’t find certain emails in Gmail?

Cloud Magic is the answer.  …

Handy free software for converting .mts files

Put down that cocktail! Your file is ready!

I’ve been wrestling with this issue for a little while – trying to convert .mts files from Adam and Toby’s camera into .mp4 files so I can edit them. I bought software that didn’t work, I had the files chopped in half by some other free software….I got frustrated.

Then I got tipped off to this….HandBrake. As it says on their website “the function of good software is to make the complex appear to be simple”.

And it does. *Sigh of relief*…

Blogging tip – Get vocal on the hyper-local

You’ve got a small business perhaps. Or maybe it’s a big business. Maybe it’s somewhere in between. And you get that by blogging you’ll be updating your website with keyword-rich content and it’ll help your performance when it comes to search engine ranking. But ultimately, if you’re going to spend all this time tap-tapping, you want people to actually read it, and what’s more, you want them to link to it for extra Google points.

But how do you get people to care? How do you get them to know you and listen and come back for more?…

Who you gonna call? A social media wake up

THE RISE AND RISE

In the first week of January 2011, the Facebook page of the Queensland Police Service was ‘liked’ by 6400 people. By the second week of January, with flood waters threatening, that number had risen to more than 160 000. On top of this, Twitter followers of the QPS increased ten-fold during the same period. In times of disaster, Queenslanders—and citizens the world over—are not only using, but relying on social media.

At a recent symposium on social media, QUT Associate Professor Axel Bruns argued that demand will increase for emergency services and government bodies to communicate with people via social media.…

Social media and keeping up with the kids

“Film and television producers should be wary of relying on traditional viewing platforms such as free-to-air TV and DVD, according to a report released by Screen Australia today,” says Michael Bodey in today’s Australian Media section.

Well, obviously.

We all know that people’s viewing habits have changed but it’s not just film and TV producers that need to take note. If content (like movies, games or TV shows) is being viewed online via social media and other platforms, then surely businesses that have sought to place their products amongst what’s popular need to do the same.…

How to never run out of blog ideas again (just by being yourself)

Tweet

It’s been said “there’s no such thing as a new idea” and when you’re blogging all the time, this statement can seem truer than ever. So how do you come up with a never-ending stream of relevant ideas to share with your audience?

Share your take on things.

But, how?

KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Write down the answers to these questions:

  • What does your reader do for work?
  • What does your reader do when they’re not at work?
  • What issues, policies, news topics or legislation affects them?

Of course, your slant on things can be really important – but the topic needs to be those which are relevant to your readers.…
