It’s been almost a month since our Social Media for Business event and some of you may be hankering for more tips and ideas. (If you couldn’t attend, check out our resources page). This week, we have plenty of social media articles (mostly from the very handy Mashable.com)!

HOW TO: Pick the Right Social Media Engagement Style – Mashable
Before you start, you have to know you are. Will you engage your social audience as a friend or a community leader? This article covers your main options and how to go about creating this kind of relationship with your Twitter followers or Facebook fans.…

Weekly round-up (Vol. 67)

This week we’re looking at website conversions and take a trip back to the future. But first… whatever happened to Google Wave? Well, apparently not much and just last week, Google effectively canned it.

RIP Google Wave – Mashable
Google’s revolutionary product that blends email, instant messaging, file sharing & wikis “didn’t get the uptake they’d hoped for & Google won’t be continuing to develop Wave as a stand alone product.” It only launched in 2009.

Here at Bluewire, we think the problem was the product’s contagiousness, or lack thereof.…

95,907 web designers at your service

Tweet

Ever wondered how cool if would be to have 95,907 web designers at your service?   What about if you only had to pay one and only if you liked their work?

Welcome to crowdsourcing.  It’s a new phenomenon enabled by the web & one that is proving very popular!

The idea behind it is that you “put your website brief out to the crowd”  (all 95,907 of them in this case) & choose the best repsonse.

You may think it seems absurd to blog about a service that can seriously under-cut the price of Bluewire’s web design offering, but I’ll explain shortly why it’s not.…

The power of social media to create brand advocates

Social media brand advocates

A guest post from Gina Lofaro – “wordmistress”

An Optus/Twitter case study

Most reading this would be aware of the awesome power of social media.  For me, Twitter is my weapon of choice in the war of messages as I find that it abundantly meets my needs in that regard. But the story I really want to tell today is about how Twitter connected me with a massive national company in a very ironic way, since I couldn’t get through to them – a telecommunications company – by phone!…

Australia’s political leaders, the nation’s top public servants, a Fortune 100 heavy weight and a TV celebrity were some of the speakers at the National Small Business Summit in Brisbane last week.

Speaking in amongst Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan, Liberal Party leader Tony Abbott, Channel 7 Sunrise host David “Kochie” Koch &  Dell’s US social media expert Richard Binhammer were some humble business owners as well!

I was honoured to speak on the Red Hot Sales, Marketing & Social Media Strategy panel.

Here is a (rough) transcript of what I spoke about.…

7 Email Marketing Tips I Just Gave a Client

Tweet

Yesterday I emailed a client of ours, Hypoxi Australia with some tips for increasing their email marketing open rates and readership!

Now it’s worth mentioning that the Hypoxi girls send one of the best email newsletters I have seen.  My bias isn’t towards its design specifically (which I’ll admit Bluewire actually does), but what I love is the red hot content that the Hypoxi girls write themselves!

And for the record, the girls get well-above average open rates & 3-4 times the average click through rates. So they are setting the standard, but still want to improve!…

“What’s the difference between a Facebook page and a Facebook group & which one should I use?”

Tweet

These were the questions posed by a client recently, and I thought the answers might be useful for others looking to kick-start their social media presence. Here are a few of the main differences:

Page

  • When you, as the administrator of the group, post messages on the wall your profile picture will be your official logo, rather than your personal profile picture,
  • Google indexes Facebook pages, meaning someone may find the page by using a search engine,
  • A page gives users the option to “like” its content, meaning a link to your page will show up in their ‘interests’ section,
  • Messages sent by administrators will come up as updates; and
  • Anyone can “like” a page.

Enter World Vision On The Old Spice Train

Tweet

I’ve been hugely taken with and amused by the Old Spice viral campaign that’s been unfolding over the past few months, from “I’m on a horse” to the string of personalised video messages addressed to the likes of Rose McGowan (“we are both attractive movie stars who just got married in my brain“).

It’s a basic and effective appeal to the audience, and I like it!

I’m also impressed by the makeshift version World Vision unleashed today. It’s a clever crack at piggybacking off some phenomenal viral success, and I wish them many  happy views on their YouTube clip.…
